2026 Detroit Lions Initial Roster: Key Personnel Shifts and Injuries

The Detroit Lions have established their initial 53-man roster for the 2026 season, a group the team will rely upon as they pursue the Lombardi Trophy. ET Sunday deadline, involved significant roster maneuvering and the strategic placement of key players on injury lists.

Defensive Backfield Reorganization

The Lions will begin the 2026 season without their two standout safeties, Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch. Both were placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list on Sunday, meaning they are forced to miss at least the first four games of the season. Consequently, the Lions will be without the tandem that started for the past three years against New Orleans (Sept. 13), at Buffalo (Sept. 17), New York Jets (Sept. 27), and at Carolina (Oct. 4). They are not expected to return until Week 5 at Arizona, though the team’s bye week follows shortly thereafter, providing an opportunity for additional recovery time.

Branch’s absence stems from an Achilles tear sustained in a Dec. 4 game last season against Dallas at Ford Field. Joseph, who last played at Kansas City on Oct. 12, missed the final 11 games of 2025 due to a degenerative condition in his knee and spent much of the summer away from the team for personal reasons.

To fill the void, the Lions may look to veterans Chuck Clark and Avonte Maddox. Clark signed this past offseason after playing 15 games with five starts for Pittsburgh in 2025, while Maddox joined the Lions in 2025 and appeared in 14 games with three starts. Reed and Rock Ya-Sin, who are expected to start at outside corner.

Quarterback and Offensive Developments

Josh Dobbs has officially won the backup quarterback job behind starter Jared Goff. He beat out undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer, who was waived Sunday evening. Altmyer completed 29 of 46 passes (63%) for 271 yards with one touchdown while starting two of the Lions’ three preseason games, but he recorded five turnovers. Despite the release, Altmyer remains a strong candidate to join the practice squad should he clear waivers.

Meanwhile, the transition of Jackson Meeks to tight end is complete. Meeks, who led the Lions with 11 catches and 176 yards as a receiver last year, made the initial 53-man roster following a strong training camp. He provided insurance at the position after Sam LaPorta missed the second half of last year with a back injury. Meeks finished the preseason tied for the team lead with seven catches, caught a touchdown in the finale against the Indianapolis Colts, and forced a fumble on special teams against the Washington Commanders.

The roster moves also included the release of running back Trayveon Williams, who ran for 57 yards and two touchdowns against the Colts but also recorded a fumble. Other cuts included Nick Whiteside, who was considered a tough cut due to his versatility and experience.

Front Seven Adjustments

The Lions retained several notable players along the defensive front, including Aidan Hutchinson, DJ Wonnum, Alim McNeill, and Levi Onwuzurike. Sixth-round rookie Skyler Gill-Howard earned a spot following a strong preseason performance, providing depth as an interior pass rusher. At linebacker, Jimmy Rolder avoided the injured list and is trending toward a return following a hamstring injury that caused him to miss most of training camp. He joins a veteran-heavy group led by All-Pro Jack Campbell and recent addition Devin White.
