Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI has stunned developers and industry observers with the unveiling of Kimi K3, a massive new model that may rival the best American systems at a fraction of the cost. The release, announced on July 16, marks a significant moment in the intensifying race for AI supremacy between the U.S. and China. As global businesses increasingly question the costs associated with deploying models from Anthropic and OpenAI, Chinese AI models are gaining traction by closing the performance gap while remaining more economical to use.
Moonshot AI Unveils 2.8 Trillion Parameter Kimi K3
According to official company disclosures, Kimi K3 is a multimodal model boasting 2.8 trillion parameters, making it the largest open-weight large language model available today. Moonshot AI has positioned K3 as the first open model in the roughly 3 trillion parameter range. The model is capable of processing images and video natively and supports a context window of one million tokens. Full model weights are scheduled for release by July 27.

Kimi K3 Benchmarks Against Claude Fable 5 and GPT 5.6 Sol
In terms of performance, Moonshot AI claims that K3 performs “competitively” with Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5—currently considered one of the most advanced models widely available—and substantially outperformed
Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8, as well as OpenAI’s GPT 5.6 Sol and GPT 5.5. On company-released benchmarks, K3 consistently ranks within the top tier of models. Specifically, Kimi K3 won two out of six programming benchmarks and secured victory in three out of six tests for general agents. Across all 35 tests conducted by the company, K3 took first place about seven times, landing in second or third place in the majority of the remaining categories.
Despite these gains, the company acknowledged that Kimi K3 still trails the top-tier proprietary models, Claude Fable 5 and GPT 5.6 Sol, in overall performance. All results provided by the company were achieved at maximum or high thinking intensity. The model is designed to target long-running programming tasks, knowledge work, and complex reasoning. In a press release, Moonshot AI stated: K3 stands as Moonshot AI’s most powerful open-source coding model to date. Operating with minimal human oversight, it can sustain long engineering sessions, navigate massive repositories, and orchestrate terminal tools.
Bank of America Analysts Assess Chinese Hardware Constraints
The technical achievement is particularly notable given the environment in which it was developed. In a note led by analyst Alex Liu, Bank of America analysts remarked: Despite persistent hardware/compute capacity constraints in China, K3 demonstrates that pre-training scaling, paired with architectural innovation, can still deliver step-change gains for flagship Chinese models.
The emergence of Kimi K3 has fueled awe across the AI world and concern in both Silicon Valley and Washington, as China appears to be rapidly erasing America’s lead in advanced AI. The performance of K3—which outperforms models like the Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT 5.5—highlights a narrowing gap between Chinese and U.S. capabilities. Compared to other known systems, K3’s 2.8 trillion parameters significantly exceed the 1.6 trillion parameters found in DeepSeek V4. As the technology continues to evolve, U.S. lawmakers are reportedly considering the implications of this rapid development cycle on the broader competitive landscape.
