Zymire Hughes was arrested by members of the U.S. Marshals Service Violent Offender Task Force, the service said in a statement. U.S. Marshals Supervisory Deputy Robert Clark told reporters that the fear that one man brought to the Philadelphia community comes to an end that night. Clark also stated that by hiding behind a Chucky-style Halloween mask, Hughes terrorized Philadelphia residents and believed he could evade law enforcement, adding that he was wrong. Officials announced that Hughes was captured around 8 p.m. on Tuesday at an apartment complex in the southeast section of Las Vegas, Nevada, on an out-of-state warrant for the alleged aggravated assault of a 40-year-old woman on August 12. Federal agents managed to track him to the residence where Hughes was hiding out for five days after he was featured on the news. Clark noted that Hughes attempted to escape his arrest, stating that he was not a happy man being brought into custody.

A nationwide search was launched for the fugitive who disguised himself as the movie villain and threatened at least six people in the span of 15 minutes near Philadelphia City Hall on August 12. Hughes first walked into a Dunkin shop at around 5:20 a.m. where a worker refused him service because he was acting “erratic.” Police allege Hughes approached more than a dozen people in Center City before he fled after his interaction with the jogger. The masked threat was caught on surveillance video chasing after a 40-year-old female jogger while making threatening remarks with his hands hidden behind his back. Hughes allegedly asked the unidentified woman, Are you ready to die? while filming his intimidation. The woman sustained an injury after tumbling to the ground trying to evade Hughes, police said. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said last week that the warrant is based on allegations of felony and misdemeanor assault after the masked man chased the jogger, asked, Do you want to die? and caused her to suffer injuries as she fled early on August 12 in Center City. Hughes was wanted on several charges, including aggravated assault, terroristic threats, possession of an instrument of crime, simple assault, reckless endangerment of another person, and other related offenses.

Authorities followed a trail via security cameras in the city that led to an apartment building where, they say, Hughes lives. Three people identified the masked suspect as Hughes, police said at a news conference last week. The mask resembles the killer doll from the “Child’s Play” horror movie franchise. Police believe the masked man may have behaved in this manner before, and they asked any other possible victims to come forward. A few days after the Center City incidents, Philadelphia Police Capt. Jason Smith said, police were tipped off that the suspect was alleged to have packed his bags and left the apartment. Hughes had moved into a Vegas apartment with his girlfriend back in February, and was on the East Coast visiting relatives when he plagued Philadelphia. After police launched a search, Hughes fled the city on August 19. Officials had feared Hughes had fled Philadelphia for either California or Nevada, where he had ties in both cities. He took a route by jumping on a plane from Trenton, New Jersey, to Orlando, Florida, before boarding another flight out to Las Vegas. Upon his return, he stayed at an apartment in the southeast part of the city.

Clark County Detention Center holds Zymire Hughes without bail

Krasner said Hughes is on probation for an unspecified crime in nearby Montgomery County. Smith said the suspect has two TikTok accounts and one Instagram account, and that he wore the mask to draw people to his online presence, Krasner said. Krasner stated, We’re not having it in this city. We are not tolerating it. Krasner also stated that they take it very seriously any time someone thinks it is funny or entertaining to terrorize and harass individuals in any neighborhood, and that regardless of his motive, his actions demonstrate that he is a punk and will not be tolerated, adding that he will be caught and held accountable for his crimes.

Booking information from the Clark County Detention Center in Nevada shows Hughes in custody with no bail, where he will remain before being extradited to Pennsylvania, with a hearing before a judge scheduled for Thursday morning. It is not clear whether he has legal counsel. Public defender’s offices in Clark County, Nevada, and Philadelphia did not immediately respond to requests for comment after regular business hours late Tuesday.
