Seattle Police are investigating a downtown stabbing after an injured man walked to the Symphony Light Rail Station on Sunday afternoon. The victim, approximately 30 years old, was transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition following the attack, which authorities state originated in the Pioneer Square neighborhood.

Pioneer Square Attack and Light Rail Transit

An investigation is underway following a violent incident in downtown Seattle that disrupted transit services on Sunday afternoon. According to the King County Sheriff’s Office, Sound Transit deputies first responded to reports of a man bleeding heavily from his torso at the Symphony Station along Third Avenue at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Firefighters arrived quickly to treat the victim, an approximately 30-year-old man, before paramedics transported him to Harborview Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition. While initial deputy response focused on the rail station, the Seattle Police Department subsequently assumed jurisdiction over the criminal investigation. Investigators established that the actual stabbing took place nearby in Occidental Square before the victim walked to the nearby light rail stop and boarded a northbound train.

Security Footages and Surveillance Gap Concerns

Sound Transit released a security camera image capturing the wounded man sitting on a station bench, visibly bleeding through his shirt at the Pioneer Square station before he boarded the train toward Symphony Station. During the emergency response, Sound Transit confirmed that the 1 and 2 line train services were halted for about 20 minutes while medical personnel treated the victim and deputies cleared the area.

The violent encounter occurred only a few blocks away from the nearest active city CCTV camera located at Third Avenue and Yesler Way. However, other municipal closed-circuit cameras installed throughout the Pioneer Square neighborhood remain turned off since the end of the FIFA World Cup in early-July. City officials kept those cameras deactivated while an ongoing audit evaluates the security of their data against federal authorities and reviews their overall efficacy.

Ongoing Search for the Suspect

As of the police department’s latest updates, law enforcement agencies have not located the perpetrator. The suspect remains at large with no description given by investigators.

Police officials did not indicate whether they believe a broader threat to the public exists as the investigation continues into the Pioneer Square area and the downtown transit corridor.
