A stabbing incident occurred in downtown Seattle on Sunday afternoon, prompting emergency responses and temporary light rail delays. A victim was treated by first responders and transported to the hospital after boarding a northbound Sound Transit light rail train in Pioneer Square. The King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) and Seattle Police Department (SPD) are investigating, with the suspect still at large as of Sunday night.

Stabbing in Occidental Park and Victim’s Movement to Light Rail

Shortly after 4 p.m. on Sunday, a man was stabbed in Occidental Park, located in Seattle’s Pioneer Square neighborhood, according to the Seattle Police Department (SPD). The victim, described as a 30-year-old man, was reported to have sustained a torso injury and was bleeding before walking to the nearby Pioneer Square Station, where he boarded a northbound Link light rail train. Surveillance footage from Sound Transit showed the man sitting on a bench at the station, visibly bleeding through his shirt, before the train departed for Symphony Station.

The stabbing occurred off Sound Transit property in the Pioneer Square neighborhood, as confirmed by the Seattle Fire Department. The victim’s movement onto the light rail system prompted emergency crews to respond to Symphony Station around 4:30 p.m., according to Sound Transit. The incident led to a 20-minute service disruption on both the 1 and 2 Lines while medical personnel treated the victim on the platform.

Emergency Response and Light Rail Delays

At Symphony Station, Seattle Fire Department personnel treated the injured man before paramedics transported him to Harborview Medical Center. The victim remained in critical condition as of Sunday night, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO). During the response, Sound Transit Deputies initially arrived at the station to assess the situation, while KCSO deputies ensured the area was secure. Service on the 1 and 2 Lines was halted for approximately 20 minutes before operations resumed, as stated by Sound Transit.

The incident occurred near the nearest active city surveillance camera, located at 3rd Avenue and Yesler Way. However, other CCTV cameras in Pioneer Square were offline as of Sunday, following an ongoing audit of their data security and functionality since the end of the FIFA World Cup in early July.

Jurisdiction Transfer and Ongoing Investigation

The Seattle Police Department assumed jurisdiction over the investigation after the victim entered the light rail system, as reported by KCSO. The King County Sheriff’s Office, which contracts with Sound Transit for transit policing, is collaborating with SPD on the case. As of Sunday night, no suspect information had been released.

Public Safety and Transit Impact

Sound Transit officials noted that the victim boarded a train after sustaining injuries. The 20-minute delay affected commuters, though service has since returned to normal, according to Sound Transit.

The lack of active CCTV coverage in parts of Pioneer Square is due to an ongoing audit determining the security of their data from federal authorities and their efficacy, which has kept other city CCTV cameras installed throughout Pioneer Square turned off since the end of the FIFA World Cup in early-July.

Victim’s Condition and Community Reaction

The victim’s condition remains critical as of Sunday night, with no further updates provided.

A Sound Transit spokesperson reiterated that the agency is working closely with law enforcement.

As of the SPD’s last update, no arrests had been made, and the suspect remains at large with no description given. Police also did not say that there was a threat to the public. The incident is a developing story, and more information will be added as it becomes available.
