South Carolina Republican Senator Tim Scott is defending fellow Republican Senator Darline Graham’s grasp of national security issues ahead of their state’s primary runoff election this Tuesday. Graham, who was appointed to the seat held by her brother, the late Senator Lindsey Graham, following his sudden death in July, is competing against South Carolina Congressman Ralph Norman for the GOP nomination to serve a full term.
Darline Graham national security debate response
The controversy stems from a debate held last week between the two candidates. When asked about U.S. national security interests in Taiwan and the South China Sea, Graham stated that she would be honest about not being well-informed on national security matters, though she noted her support for the military. She further added that because her brother served in the Air Force for 33 years and her father served in the Army, she would do everything in her power to support the military, while acknowledging that she was not a polished politician and that national security was not her area of expertise, despite her commitment to supporting the armed forces.
Senator Tim Scott endorsement of Darline Graham
During an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” this past Sunday, Senator Scott, who serves as chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, dismissed concerns regarding the debate blunder. Scott stated that Darline Graham was the real deal, describing her as highly qualified, incredibly competent, and ready for prime time. When asked if a U.S. senator should have an understanding of national security, Scott responded that the answer was yes and that she possessed such an understanding. Scott did not detail specific national security experience, instead stating that the question today was whether she was prepared to serve in the United States Senate and represent the people of South Carolina on the issues relevant to the current moment, and he affirmed that she addressed those issues spot-on.
Scott noted he waited several weeks before issuing his endorsement because he wanted to be certain that she was ready. He added that, as the senior senator for the great state of South Carolina, he could tell people that Darline Graham was the person he wanted in the Senate with him to represent the people of South Carolina, calling it an easy choice.
President Donald Trump rally for Darline Graham
President Donald Trump also moved to support Graham, traveling to South Carolina on Friday to rally for her campaign. Addressing her debate performance, the president said, I watched that. I thought it was a very honest answer, actually. At the rally, Trump told voters that she only knew how to put America first and that they would be very proud of their vote if they chose to support her.

Congressman Ralph Norman primary runoff campaign
Congressman Ralph Norman, meanwhile, has questioned whether voters have had sufficient time to vet the political newcomer for a six-year term. In an interview with The Associated Press, Norman called Trump’s endorsement of Graham a head scratcher,
arguing that his own experience in Congress and business, alongside consistent votes for Trump’s priorities, make him the stronger candidate. Norman previously finished second to Graham in the 10-candidate special primary held on August 11, where neither candidate secured the majority required to win outright. The winner of Tuesday’s runoff will face Democrat Annie Andrews in November.
While Graham held various public policy jobs in South Carolina, she had never run for or held public office prior to her July appointment. She maintains that she has accomplished much during her time as an interim senator and that she will continue to advocate for the goals of the president, who encouraged her to run for the full term. Norman, who backed former Governor Nikki Haley in the 2024 presidential primary before becoming a Trump supporter, noted that he has already gone through a statewide campaign this cycle, having come up short in the June gubernatorial primary.
