1981年の名作が復活するレゴ ドンキーコング アーケードの全貌

セットの型番は72051で、ピース数は1,367に及ぶ。サイズは高さ約39cm(15.5インチ)、幅約27cm(10.5インチ)である。72051 Donkey Kong Arcade celebrates the debut of Donkey Kong, Mario (née Jumpman) and Pauline. The 1981 Donkey Kong arcade game was the brainchild of Shigeru Miyamoto, legendary game designer who gave us the likes of Zelda, Mario, Pikmin and more. He conceived of the original Donkey Kong Arcade game (under the supervision of another Nintendo legend, Game Boy creator Gunpei Yokoi), as a love triangle between Donkey Kong, Mario (who was first known as Jumpman), and Pauline the damsel in distress.

対象年齢はレトロな題材や複雑な組み立てを考慮して18歳以上とされており、大人のレゴファンに向けた製品として位置づけられている。LEGO Donkey Kong Arcade is comprised of 1,367 pieces and contains many moving parts. Once assembled, it becomes an interactive game that looks remarkably like the original arcade cabinet. It has the big Donkey Kong logo at the top and character images on all four corners of the “display.” There’s a barrel-release lever below, along with a joystick and Jump button. The screen depicts a remarkable (if slightly simplified) re-creation of the game’s first level, complete with Donkey Kong, Lady, and Jumpman on a construction site. It even has a flaming oil drum and hammer power-ups.

最大の見どころは、実際に遊べるインタラクティブなゲーム機能だ。You can pull the lever to release a barrel (there are 21 in the set), sending it rolling down through the level. Just like in the real game, you can use the joystick to move Jumpman, and press the button to make him jump. There’s even a behind-the-set mechanism you build that moves the barrels at the bottom back to the top. The barrel mechanism is essentially a pump. It uses a stack of 14 Barrels going up the side of the model. Each time the barrel lever is pulled, it adds one barrel to the bottom of the stack and one falls out the top. The system holds 20 barrels so there can be 6 barrels rolling down at a time. The barrels roll all the way from the top to the bottom where they are collected in a hopper that is connected to the barrel pump. This forms an infinite barrel loop which is, by definition, “barrels of fun”.

The biggest challenge was getting the barrels to roll down slowly without stopping or getting stuck. This was achieved through a combination of rolling over steps, LEGO studs, slopes, bows and using LEGO Technic beams which are slightly thinner than LEGO Bricks. This allowed us to capture the feeling of the gameplay where the barrel rolls down slowly. The joystick moves Jumpman from left to right using a long lever up the back of the model, connected to a dingler. The jump button uses a similar mechanism used in a piano key. When it is pressed down in front of the model, the other end of a see-saw lever presses up on a long rod with Jumpman at the top. When the button is released gravity returns Jumpman to the bottom.
