Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges Amid Climate Crisis
According to the latest data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), renewable energy capacity additions hit a record high in 2022, with solar and wind leading the charge. The agency reported that over 300 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable energy capacity was installed globally last year, marking a significant increase from previous years.
Solar power accounted for nearly half of all new installations, with over 160 GW added, while wind energy saw 93 GW of new capacity. Hydropower and bioenergy also contributed, though at a slower pace. The report highlights that these figures reflect a growing shift away from fossil fuels as countries strive to meet their climate commitments.
“The renewable energy transition is accelerating, driven by falling costs, policy support, and growing public demand for clean energy,” said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA.
Regionally, Asia dominated the growth, with China alone responsible for over half of the world’s new solar capacity. Europe and North America also saw substantial increases, though their contributions were more modest in comparison. The report notes that while growth is strong, further expansion is needed to meet the Paris Agreement targets.
Despite the progress, challenges remain. Supply chain disruptions and permitting delays continue to hinder deployment in some regions. However, IRENA projects that renewable energy could supply up to 80% of global electricity by 2050 under a sustainable development scenario.
Critics argue that the pace of expansion must accelerate further to avoid catastrophic climate impacts. The agency warns that without immediate action, the world may fall short of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
