The Perseids originate from debris left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. This icy body orbits the sun every 133 years and is not scheduled to return until 2125. Observations of this specific meteor shower date back over 2,000 years, and the event remains one of the most spectacular space phenomena for observers of the night sky. While the Perseids began their 2026 show on July 17, the activity will continue until August 24.

For those unable to travel to a dark-sky viewing site, NASA is hosting a livestream of the event. The broadcast begins at 9 p.m. PT on Wednesday, August 12, on YouTube. NASA will feature real-time sky imagery from its Automated Lunar and Meteor Observatory at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Meteoroid experts from the center will host the stream, joined by guest speakers to discuss the history of the shower and other facts.


Specific locations, such as Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California, are noted for providing dark skies and unparalleled conditions for viewing. The dry climate in such desert settings helps keep haze and cloud cover at a minimum, which is essential for maximizing the number of visible meteors. Regardless of the specific location, the American Meteor Society notes that the Perseids occur in August when temperatures are typically comfortable for a night spent under the stars.
The 2026 peak arrives following other summer celestial events, such as the Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids, which peaked in late July. While those events were affected by a nearly full moon, the Perseids benefit from the dark moon phase, ensuring the best possible visibility for one of the calendar year’s most anticipated astronomical events.
