According to Samsung, the Flex Titanium technology integrates two specific titanium-based components—a titanium-alloy film and a titanium plate—that work in tandem to balance slimness, flexibility, and strength within the foldable display structure. Sunghoon Moon, EVP and Senior Executive of the Mobile R&D Office – H/W at Samsung Electronics, stated, “Samsung’s strength in the foldable category comes from connecting user needs with our technologies that deliver tangible benefits in everyday life.” He added that for the next generation of foldables, the company is building on years of expertise to refine its display designs.

OLED Structural Stiffness Improvements

Technical specifications for the new display structure indicate that the titanium-alloy film provides structural support from underneath the OLED panel. This component reportedly offers “20 times greater mechanical stiffness” compared to traditional polymer film and measures approximately one-third the thickness of an average human hair. The accompanying titanium plate, located under the film, is designed to enable a tighter bonding with the display module, which contributes to the overall structural integrity of the device.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Redesign and Z Fold Wide Strategy

The Galaxy Unpacked event, held under the tagline “A new shape unfolds,” is expected to serve as the launch platform for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the Galaxy Z Flip 8, and a new Z Fold Wide model. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is reportedly receiving its most consequential form-factor change since book-style foldables first launched as a category. Meanwhile, reports suggest that the Z Fold Wide will be a shorter, wider device, similar in shape to the rumored iPhone Ultra. This addition is viewed as part of Samsung’s strategy to maintain a competitive edge in the foldable market as Apple potentially prepares to enter the space.

Conversely, the upgrade path for the Galaxy Z Flip 8 appears to be more iterative. According to reports, the device is expected to feature a new chip but largely retain the same hardware configuration as the previous generation. Early pricing signals suggest the potential for a higher price tag for the Flip 8, marking a point of divergence in the upgrade stories heading into the July 22 event. In addition to the foldable lineup, regulatory filings indicate that the Galaxy Watch 9 series and Watch Ultra 2 are also expected to appear at the London event, though substantive pre-show details regarding the watch lineup remain limited.

While the product launch is confirmed for July 22, the devices are not expected to hit retail shelves on that same day. Based on previous launch timelines, availability is anticipated within a few weeks following the event. As Samsung Display is a long-time supplier for Apple, industry speculation has also suggested that the improved Flex Titanium display technology could eventually appear in future foldable products from other manufacturers, including potential foldable iPhone models.
