ウェールズがオーストラリアの地でワラビーズに勝利したのは55年前のことだ。1969年、シドニー・クリケット・グラウンドで19対16で勝利を収めたのは、伝説の選手たちを揃えたチームだった。バリー・ジョン、ギャレス・エドワーズ、JPRウィリアムズ、ジョン・ドーズらが、有名な勝利を収めるために会場にいた。
しかしそれ以来、ワラビーズはホームでウェールズに11試合連続で勝利し、緑と金色が一面に広がった。

両チームが必死に勝利を狙う試合があるとすれば、それはこの試合だ。
ピッチ内外で、オーストラリアとウェールズは、それぞれの歴史上最低とも言える時期を経験してきた。ウェールズは7連敗しており、昨年のシックス・ネイションズで歴史的な最下位に終わった記憶も新しい。
ワラビーズは昨年のワールドカップのグループリーグであっけなく敗退し、エディー・ジョーンズ監督の悲惨な（そして短い）在任期間の後にチームを解散した。
若いスター選手たちが組合を離れ、NFLに入団したり、ラグビーリーグに転向したりする話はこれより前だ。大量の資金の消失や試合運営のまずさなど、フィールド外での数々の問題も加えると、2つの誇り高き組合には本当に朗報が必要だ。
そうなると、経験の浅い両チームの選手が怯えて保守的な試合を展開し、激しい戦いになるのだろうか？ それとも、両チームは警戒心を捨て、国が必要としているときに大胆に英雄になるのだろうか？
