Global Renewable Energy Growth Accelerates Despite Economic Challenges
According to the latest report from the International Energy Agency (IEA), renewable energy sources accounted for nearly 30% of global electricity generation in 2022, up from 28% the previous year. This marks the fastest growth rate in over a decade, driven primarily by solar and wind power.
The IEA report highlights that solar power capacity additions reached a record 160 gigawatts (GW) in 2022, surpassing previous annual records. Wind power also saw significant expansion, with 72 GW of new installations globally.
In Europe, countries like Germany and Spain have led the transition, with Germany generating over 50% of its electricity from renewables in 2022. Spain, meanwhile, saw its renewable capacity exceed 50% of total electricity generation for the first time.
Despite these gains, challenges remain. The IEA warns that over 2.4 billion people still lack access to clean cooking fuels, and progress in developing nations has slowed due to economic constraints.
Experts emphasize that while growth is strong, the pace must double by 2030 to meet global climate targets.
Investment in renewables also surged, with over $1.1 trillion directed toward clean energy projects worldwide in 2022, according to BloombergNEF.
Looking ahead, the IEA projects that renewables could supply up to 40% of global electricity by 2027 if current trends continue.
